Grande Prairie Photography Club Mentorship 2026
Share Your Skills, Grow Your Skills
One of the greatest strengths of the Grande Prairie Photography Club is the willingness of our members to share what they know and support one another.
Our Mentorship Program is designed to bring photographers together to learn, grow, and build connections through a shared love of photography.
Whether you're picking up a camera for the first time or have years of experience behind the lens, everyone has something to learn, and something to share.
The program runs for three months, with mentors volunteering approximately three hours each month to help another club member develop new skills, gain confidence, and enjoy new photographic experiences.
The Club will pair mentors and mentees based on photography interests, experience, and learning goals whenever possible.
What You Can Learn
Every mentorship is unique and shaped by the interests of the mentor and mentee. Topics can include:
-
Camera basics
-
Composition
-
Lighting
-
Creative techniques
-
Portrait photography
-
Landscape photography
-
Wildlife photography
-
Bird Photography
-
Macro Photography
-
Photo editing and workflow
-
Or any other area you'd like to explore
For Mentors
This is a volunteer position, and a way to share your accumulated knowledge of your photographic talent with another member. Even a beginner can help another beginner learn the basics of their camera.
You don't need to be a professional photographer to be a mentor. If you have knowledge or experience you're willing to share, you have something valuable to offer. Sometimes the most meaningful lessons come from someone who remembers exactly what it was like to be learning.
Your three hours each month don't need to be formal lessons. You can:
-
Head out on a photo walk together.
-
Invite your mentee to join you on a shoot.
-
Share your editing workflow.
-
Meet over coffee to review images and talk about photography.
-
Connect online to answer questions or work through challenges.
-
Often, it's not just about camera settings, it's about sharing how you see the world, approach a scene, interact with people, and solve creative challenges. Those conversations can inspire confidence and open up new ways of thinking.
As a mentor, we ask that you:
-
Listen to your mentee's goals.
-
Help set achievable objectives.
-
Share honest, constructive feedback.
-
Encourage curiosity, creativity, and growth.
-
Be available during the times you've agreed upon.
-
For Mentees
Your mentor is volunteering their time because they enjoy helping fellow photographers grow. The more you put into the experience, the more you'll get out of it. To make the most of your mentorship:
-
Think about what you'd like to accomplish over the next three months.
-
Come prepared with questions and photos you'd like to discuss.
-
Be open to trying new ideas and receiving constructive feedback.
-
Respect your mentor's time and work together to schedule meetings.
-
Stay engaged and take the initiative to keep the mentorship moving forward.
If the Match Isn't the Right Fit
Every mentorship is different. If, at any time, either the mentor or mentee feels the partnership isn't working as hoped, please get in touch with a Photo Club board member or the mentorship program facilitator, Natasha Haldane, (President). We are invested in your experience, and all conversations will remain confidential.
Mentor & Mentee Meet-Up
To help everyone get started, we'll host an introductory gathering where mentors and mentees can meet, get to know one another, and begin planning their mentorship journey.
Mentees are welcome to request a specific mentor, although pairings will depend on availability and finding the best fit.
Help Us Grow the Program
This mentorship program is built by our members, for our members.
We'd love to hear about your experience and welcome your ideas for making it even better. At the end of the program, participants may be invited to complete a short survey to help shape future mentorship opportunities.
Please note: The number of mentees we can accept depends on the number of volunteer mentors available. While we'll do our best to match everyone, we can't guarantee that every applicant will receive a mentor.
If you have any questions or feedback, please get in touch with a board member or email us at gppc.website@gmail.com.
